Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) – ITALY

Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), was founded in 1859. It represents a leading institution, in Italy and in Europe for its competence in teaching, research and international cooperation. POLITO plays an active role in European Community research, co-operation, training, mobility and cultural programmes and has, thanks to these, increased and consolidated its relations with the major European and non European institutions. At POLITO research activities are well developed in all the engineering and architecture sectors and departments manage the research activities. POLITO takes part in many international programs, as BRITE, ESPRIT, TEMPUS, Erasmus and Prometheus. An enterprise system is strictly connected with POLITO, as demonstrated by the 630 contracts made in the last year with external companies. With its expertise in the research areas are concerning the innovative materials and chemical Engineering. The department of Applied Science and Technology at POLITO involves in the project by two groups: Inorganic Composites and Advanced Ceramic Group and the Electrochemistry Group. The electrochemistry group is involved in many research projects particularly related to lithium systems as: Regional funding C116 on lithium ion batteries (2004-2008 coordinator), national project PRIN 2008 on Lithium air systems (2010-2013 coordinator), national project ALADIN – Industria 2015 efficienza modeling on new efficient lighting systems with new lithium ions batteries (2009-2012), EU project SMART-EC (ref n.258203) Smart electrochromic active multifunctional devices (ICT 2010-2013). There is no overlapping between these national and international projects with the STABLE project. POLITO is also an experienced project manager and a specialist in management of R&D and multi –partner project from FP3 to now.

Main tasks attributed: synthesis and characterization of ultra-thin protecting layers (Task 1.1) and coating of lithium anode (Task 1.3) in WP1; synthesis and characterization of nanostructured modeling nanosheets (Task 2.1), optimization of MnO2 based nano catalysts or multilayered active catalysts (Task 2.2) and synthesis and characterization of nanostructured membrane (Task 2.3) in WP2; optimization of PC/EC/DEC based solvents system (Task 3.1) in WP3; scientific coordination in WP7; project dissemination in WP8 and administrative and financial project management in WP9.

a) Inorganic Composites and Advanced Ceramic Group

Prof. Qiuping Chen: Coordinator, Associated professor of Politecnico di Torino in The department of Applied Science and Technology at POLITO. The EU projects which she has participated and coordinated are: “Europe-China Clean Energy Centre (EC²)” Fund: 12,000,000 euro; “LIFT – Leadership In Fibre Laser Technology” Fund: 16,000,000 euro; European Asia-Link program “EU-Asia university exchange and cooperation in the field of telecommunication technologies” ASIA-LINK-CN/004 (81206) etc. She is the manager of project “Studies on Low Cost and Safe Lithium-Ion Batteries and Battery Management System for Electric Car Design” which is an industry contracted project between Politecnico di Torino and Anhui Jiang Hui Automobile Co.

Dr. Qiuling Chen: 2004-2007 PhD student in the group of Inorganic Composites and Advanced Ceramic and Post–doc since 2008 in the same department. Competences and research interest of Dr. Chen are mainly focused on the preparation and characterization of innovative materials for different applications.

b) Electrochemistry Group

Prof. Nerino Penazzi: degreed cum laude in chemistry in 1977 at the Turin University, Faculty of Sciences. He is actually associated professor in Chemistry at the First Faculty of the Politecnico di Torino. From 1978 he has been carrying out scientific research in the field of materials regarding the electrochemical power sources (Ni-Zn, Lead-acid, alkaline systems). In the last ten years Prof. Penazzi has been investigating the electrochemical behaviour of PEMFC electrode catalyzers and their supporting materials and took into consideration the Li-ion cell, his actual main subject of experimental investigation. He has been engaged in the preparation and characterization of electrode materials (some of which patented) and the polymeric electrolyte. Very recently he focused his interest in the Li-air system. Prof. Penazzi is member of the International Society of Electrochemistry and of the Italian Chemical Society and is in the Journal of Power Sources advisory board.

Dr. Silvia Bodoardo: PhD in Materials Engineering. She is actually Assistant Professor at the POLITO and actually teaches Chemistry, Materials Technology and Electrochemistry. Her actual main research activities focus on films of high cathode material synthesis and study, polymer electrolyte synthesis, electrochromics materials and devices, cells assembled with nanostructured electrodes and polymer electrolytes, morphological, structural and electrochemical characterization of materials and assembled cells. Among others, she is responsible for ALADIN (IND2015) national project on Lithium ion system for lighting and SMAT-EC ICT (ref n.258203) project on electrochromic devices.

Prof. Zhang Meng: PhD. Associate Professor, visiting researcher at the Materials Science and Chemical Engineering Department of Research field: Designing and preparation of nanostructures of inorganic materials for the battery; Synthesis of novel electrode materials and their electrochemical properties etc.
